The Society for the Severely Mentally Handicapped (SSMH), is a voluntary welfare organisation which offers rehabilitation facilities to children and youths with severe multiple mental and physical disabilities. It also endeavours to give the children a place to belong and an opportunity to be independent through targeted therapy and education.
Established in June 1985, the primary objective of SSMH was to cater to the needs of severely mentally disabled children who could not be placed in training centres for the disabled that existed then. The operations started with four members of staff. Over the years, the centre has continued to expand its facilities and programs to meet the same objective. It now has grown to include more staff members, which include teachers, a housekeeper, physiotherapists, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist and some volunteers all playing their respective roles for the severely disabled.
SSMH is committed to running programs that are nurturing and supportive, and aims to continually affect remedial measures to meet the children’s basic needs in order for them to move forward in their journey from welfare to self-reliance.
To achieve this, SSMH requires an estimated RM 25,000 a month to maintain the training centre. Funds are acquired mainly through donations received from the general public and some government grants and subsidies from the Department of Social Welfare. Funds are also raised through ongoing fundraising efforts organised by the Society and its volunteers.
This Mother’s Day “Gift of Song” event on Sunday, May 8, 2016, is a collaborative effort between SSMH and its kind supporters. This concert is brought to you by Klang Valley Harmony, the Malaysian Ukelele Group and performers from the BAC Group of companies.
